The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) — an independent group of medical specialists, health economists and consumer nominees — considers and recommends drugs proposed for listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and advises the Minister for Health and Aged Care on PBS matters.
The Minister for Health and Aged Care is able to approve for listing any PBAC recommended items on the PBS which have a financial impact of $20 million or less in any of the forward estimate years.
Recommended listings on the PBS which have a financial impact over $20 million in in each of the forward estimate years require consideration by Cabinet.
